Cat. #001243245: MARLENE DIETRICH

Lovely 8.5 x 11-inch black and white portrait on a page taken from a film book, boldly signed in blue felt-tip marker in her later years. In good condition, with a few minor crinkles, and charming for framing and display. German-born leading lady Marlene Dietrich was discovered while performing in a cabaret act in the 1920s and cast in increasingly important silent films through the end of the decade. In 1930, she starred as Lola Lola in Josef von Sternberg's The Blue Angel and, exploding into a heated love affair with the director, relocated to Hollywood, where he cast her in Morocco (1930), for which she earned an Oscar nod. Lili Marlene, as she was dubbed, went on to star in classic films like Blonde Venus (1932), The Song of Songs (1933), The Scarlet Empress (1934), The Devil Is a Woman (1935), Desire (1936), The Garden of Allah (1936), Knight Without Armor (1937), Angel (1937), Destry Rides Again (1939), Seven Sinners (1940), The Flame of New Orleans (1941), Manpower (1941), Pittsburgh (1942), The Lady Is Willing (1942), Kismet (1944), A Foreign Affair (1948), Stage Fright (1950), No Highway in the Sky (1951), Rancho Notorious (1952), Around the World in Eighty Days (1956), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), Touch of Evil (1958), and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). Alas, heavy drinking throughout her career led to numerous falls, and she eventually suffered a crippling compound fracture of the leg. After 1979, she was entirely bedridden until her death in 1992.
