Zhang Daqian Tiger Chinese Painting Print – Valley Pine

Zhang Daqian's tiger owns its valley: the great cat among pines, the valley's green depths behind, rendered in the master's colorful, confident manner. Zhang Daqian painted tigers throughout his career with a naturalist's attention and a showman's flair — he understood that the tiger is China's great symbol of martial power and warded-off evil. It is the king of beasts, at home, and the valley knows it.

The tiger's presence is the composition's whole argument: striped, powerful, drawn with the authority the subject demands — the muscles' suggestion, the gaze's focus, the stripes' bold pattern. The pines provide the dark, vertical setting; the valley its green depth. Zhang Daqian's brush gives the beast both majesty and ease — this tiger is not performing, it is presiding.

Presiding tigers suit studies, offices, walls that want strength — and the Year of the Tiger crowd, for whom it makes a perfect gift. The print comes as the unmounted core only, with no frame or scroll, and strong framing suits its strength. A majestic, confident piece.
